A PVC-based suspension ink formulated with plasticizers that will not dry or cure in the screen at ambient room temperature, requiring heat exposure (typically 320°F / 160°C) to fully polymerize.
Deep Dive & Practical Application
Plastisol is the most widely used ink in the global garment decorating industry due to its ease of use, long shelf stability, vibrant opacity, and resistance to drying in the screen during press downtime.
Unlike water-based inks that dry through air evaporation, plastisol remains liquid until heated to its fusion temperature (typically 300°F to 330°F depending on resin chemistry). When passed through a conveyor dryer, the resin particles absorb the plasticizer and fuse into a continuous, flexible plastic film locked around the cotton or polyester fibers.
Plastisol requires proper cleanup using specialized press washes, ink degraders, and plastisol-safe emulsion removers.
Shop Floor & Profitability Impact
Plastisol offers the lowest scrap rate and easiest shop handling, but improper conveyor dryer cure temperatures lead to under-cured ink that washes out in the laundry, resulting in expensive customer reprints.
