I have received countless comments asking about heat transfers, the different options out there, and the best way to produce full-color jobs quickly. After a ton of research and digging around, I found a clear winner in the affordable direct-to-garment (DTG) alternative space: The Uninet iColor 550.
Uninet was kind enough to send me a unit to demo for all of you. This is a heat transfer laser printer that can apply full-color images to t-shirts in less than three minutes. Let’s dive into how it works and why this might be the exact piece of equipment your shop needs.
Why Choose Laser Toner over DTG?
I have considered getting a direct-to-garment printer forever. But if you're in the industry, you've heard the horror stories: if you don't have a constant flow of work and aren't using the machine every single day, the liquid ink clogs. They become a massive maintenance nightmare.

How the Process Works (Under 3 Minutes)
The process is incredibly fast and totally self-weeding. Here is the step-by-step workflow:
- Import & RIP: Open your art in the included Pro RIP software. A massive lifesaver here is the "Knock Me Out Black" feature, which removes black from your design so the shirt color shows through, keeping the final print incredibly soft.
- Print the Transfer: Print your image onto the coated transparent transfer media. The printer lays down the color first, then does a pass laying white toner over the top (in reverse).
- Marry the Adhesive: Take the printed transfer and an adhesive sheet. Put them on your heat press (preheated to 310°F) for 120 seconds.
- The Hot Peel: As soon as the press pops, you must peel the adhesive backing off the transfer in one smooth, continuous motion while it's still hot on the platen.
- Press to the Garment: Trim the edges to remove any residual glue, place the transfer on your shirt (works on cotton, and they have premium paper for polyester to prevent dye migration), and press for 30 seconds.
- Final Cure: Let the shirt cool completely, roll the film off, and do one final 30-second press with a Teflon sheet to permanently adhere and seal the design.
