Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) powder applied to wet DTF ink that melts into a flexible, rubberized adhesive layer, bonding the printed transfer permanently to apparel fibers.
Deep Dive & Practical Application
After CMYK and white ink are printed onto the PET film, the wet film passes through an automated powder shaker box that coats the wet ink with TPU powder while vibrating off any excess from unprinted areas.
The film then travels under an infrared heating tunnel (230°F–270°F), melting the granular powder into a glossy, uniform adhesive backing.
TPU powder comes in various micron particle sizes (e.g. 80–200 mesh) and formulations (white powder for general apparel, black powder to block dye migration on dark polyester jerseys).
Shop Floor & Profitability Impact
Proper powder cure (curing until glossy with an "orange peel" texture) is critical. Under-cured powder results in wash failure; scorched powder becomes brittle and cracks.
